The 60-Day Transfer Lock Rule, Explained
KB-7.3 · 1 min · Updated September 2026
ICANN policy requires a 60-day lock that prevents a domain from transferring to a different registrar in three specific situations: immediately after initial registration, immediately after an inter-registrar transfer, and after a registrant's contact information changes.
This exists to prevent abuse. Without it, a bad actor could gain unauthorized access to a domain and immediately transfer it away to a different registrar, making it much harder to recover.
The same 60-day lock also applies when a domain is pushed from one NameBright account to another, since a push is triggered by the same registration and transfer events that trigger the lock, even though a push doesn't involve an outside registrar or an auth code.
