What Is RDAP and How Does It Replace WHOIS?
KB-4.3 · 1 min · Updated September 2026
RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern, standardized replacement for the older WHOIS protocol, developed under ICANN policy to fix WHOIS's long-standing shortcomings: WHOIS has no consistent data format across registrars, no built-in access controls, and no standard way to handle privacy requirements like GDPR. RDAP addresses all three: it returns structured, machine-readable data, supports differentiated access levels so only authorized parties see certain fields, and is designed with privacy regulation in mind from the start.
ICANN has required accredited registrars to support RDAP for several years now, alongside legacy WHOIS. As an ICANN-accredited registrar, NameBright supports RDAP as required.
