Can You Get an Expired Domain Back?

KB-5.5 · 1 min · Updated September 2026

Usually yes, but how easily, and for how much, depends entirely on which stage the domain is currently in.

Still in the grace period? Yes, straightforwardly: renew it like normal, typically at or near the regular renewal price.

In the redemption period? Still yes, but expect to pay a redemption fee in addition to the renewal cost. NameBright's own redemption fee is $85 per domain for .com/.net, on top of the renewal. Redemption is self-service: once a domain enters this window, Domain Manager shows a notification with the days remaining and the redemption price, with a Redeem action right there.

In pending delete? No; this window exists specifically to prevent any action on the domain, including recovery by its original owner, while it finishes releasing.

Already released and available again? At that point it's available to register fresh, and whoever registers it first gets it, whether that's the original registrant or someone else entirely, including, potentially, a drop-catching service (see Drop-Catching and Backordering, Explained).
