Do You Need Hosting to Use a Domain?
KB-6.5 · 1 min · Updated September 2026
No; a domain works on its own for several genuinely useful purposes without any hosting at all.
Email forwarding and URL forwarding don't require hosting: NameBright's own free forwarding features let a domain redirect visitors to another URL, or forward email addressed to that domain to an existing inbox elsewhere, with no separate hosting product involved.
Holding a domain as an investment doesn't require hosting either. Plenty of registered domains simply sit unused, parked, or redirected while their owner holds them for later use or resale (see What Is Domain Investing?).
Building an actual website , though, does require hosting somewhere. If the goal is a live site at your domain, you'll need a web hosting provider (NameBright doesn't offer one directly; see What Is Web Hosting and How Does It Relate to Your Domain?) and you'll point your domain's DNS at it.
